Making Sure Your Dental Implants Are Successful

Posted .

Dental implants are a very popular solution for the problem of missing teeth. They are prosthetic teeth that are mounted on titanium posts that have been placed directly into your jawbone. Once the posts are in, your jawbone grows around them which strengthens your jawbone and makes your implants very sturdy. They look exactly like your natural teeth, and can be brushed and flossed. But just because you receive dental implants, that does not mean that you can forget about them once they are in. In fact, their success or failure will depend on you.

Before you start the implant procedure, be aware that surgery is required to place them, and you must have healthy gums and enough jawbone to support them. Certain medical conditions and medication may mean that you will need another type of tooth replacement. But you must be committed to your implants’ success. You will need to carefully follow your dentist’s instructions about your postoperative care and your follow-up appointments. If you aren’t willing to do that, you should think about another procedure. Gum disease can be another hazard to your implants. Without healthy gums, your implants could fail. You will need to brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss once a day, and see your dentist for your routine cleanings and exams. Tobacco and drug use can lead to gum disease, and if you are not willing to quit, implants may not be for you.
